Young Chinese singer-songwriter Leah Dou is getting ready to take on a lead role for the first time in her film career in Bipolar, a new film set to hit cinemas on June 18.

The new film follows a young woman's journey as she seeks to understand and define herself as a unique individual.

"According to your own light" reads a line from the film's official poster, encouraging audiences to find their own interpretation of Dou's story.

"In this world, you have Group A problems and I have Group B. We may not be able to fully understand each other. If you don't accept yourself, it's hard to accept the world," Dou once said in an interview with media.

Bipolar, female director Li Mengqiao's first feature film, has been shortlisted for the main competition unit at the 50th Rotterdam International Film Festival, an international film gala that focuses on alternative and experimental movies produced mainly by emerging filmmakers.

As a young musician who makes music in a rather off-the-mainstream style to express herself, Dou also composed the original soundtrack for the film to exhibit her character's rich inner world.
