A man in Jinan, East China's Shandong Province, who is one of the rare people in China with so-called "panda blood," has been voluntarily donating his AB Rh negative blood for 18 years in a row.

The amount of blood he has given over the course of 80 donations now totals 70,000 milliliters.

The man, named Wang Yunian, said he has been running, cycling, hiking and doing other exercises during his free time over the years to stay in good shape and be ready to donate blood for whoever needs it, reported Xinhua News Agency on Tuesday.

"I got to know a number of people like me with this blood type since I started donating blood in 2003, and I have increasingly felt the kindness of this group of ours - everyone stays positive for blood donations just to help relieve the pain of those patients with 'panda blood'," said the 49-year-old man.

AB Rh negative blood is referred to as "panda blood" in China due to its rareness. A report by the Health Newspaper said there are nearly 4 million people with rare blood types in China, but fewer than 40,000 people are aware of it and have registered, according to incomplete statistics from the China Rare Blood Alliance.
