Chengdu, Southwest China's Sichuan Province, welcomed a "Olympics baby panda" who was born on the opening day of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday. Many believe the baby panda will bring good fortune to the Chinese team.

The newborn female panda came out at 20:20 pm on Friday, with a birth weight of 132 grams. It was the second child of the mother panda, Zhaomei, who has been at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding since 2014 after being rescued from Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan.

Both the mother and the child are in good health, according to the report.

Celebrating the birth of the baby panda, some Chinese netizens suggested it should be named "First Gold [medal]" as its birth on the night of the opening of the Olympics is hoped to bring good luck for the Chinese team.

The panda research base has successfully bred four newborn pandas in 2021, according to the report.

Chinese team has secured a total of 21 medals at the Tokyo Olympics, including nine gold medals, as of 16:40 pm on Tuesday.
