Chinese Foreign Ministry deplored and rejected the wanton comments by the US and the European Union (EU) on the Macao Court of Final Appeal's decision to dismiss appeals by three candidate teams and to uphold the decision of the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election to exclude their candidate lists from the upcoming election.

The spokesperson condemned that the US and EU, which made wanton comments directed towards the affairs of China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), violating the international law and basic norms governing international relations, according to a statement published by Chinese Foreign Ministry on its website on Monday.

The spokesperson said that supporting the Basic Law of the Macao SAR and pledging allegiance to the SAR are the legal requirements for members of the Legislative Assembly. The ruling made by the Court of Final Appeal on the basis of laws and facts has implemented the fundamental principle of "patriots administering Macao", safeguarded the constitutional order enshrined in the Constitution and the Basic Law, kept the solemn election of the seventh term of the Macao Legislative Assembly free from irregularities, and demonstrated the judicial justice and authority of the Macao SAR.

The spokesperson noted that the relevant decision is supported by all parties in Macao and is firmly supported by the Chinese Foreign Ministry

The remarks by Foreign Ministry came after spokespersons of the US State Department and the European External Action Service voiced their opposition to the disqualification of candidates and called for so-called democracy, rights and freedoms in Macao to be upheld.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, since Macao's return, "one country, two systems" has made remarkable achievements possible in the region. The wide-ranging rights and freedoms enjoyed by the people in Macao are fully protected in accordance with law, said the spokesperson, noting these facts shall not be distorted.

"I want to stress that Macao is China's SAR. The Chinese side will continue to resolutely ensure the steady and sustained implementation of the successful practice of 'one country, two systems' with Macao characteristics. In the meantime, we will firmly oppose outside interference in Macao affairs and China's internal affairs by any external forces," said the spokesperson.
