A new postal service offered by China Post has brought back the now forgotten handwritten letters as people scramble to send theirs letters to space for a mere 19 yuan ($3) each.

The mailing service sounds like it came from science fiction. Jointly launched by the China Space Administration and China Post, it first hit the shelves in June. The space letter kit, which costs only 19 yuan, includes a special space letterhead, postage-paid envelope and two delicate postcards with space images. The envelope is addressed to "the space post office." And with this kit, anyone can send a handwritten letter to space at any post office in China.

These letters will be scanned electronically into a chip and will be sent by spacecraft to the "space post office" on the Chinese space station. Selected letters will be displayed and read to the world by the taikonauts in space.

The manager of the space post project said he hopes that this mailing service will serve as a special link between the public and the Chinese space station to further stimulate people's pride in manned space missions.
