Potential contamination caused by blast furnace gas reportedly took place on Sunday in a local steel proceeding company in Northeast China's Liaoning Province after regional power was cut, causing 23 people who came into contact with the leaked gas sent to a local hospital for treatment.

Liaoning Penghui Casting Co, based in Liaoyang, Liaoning Province, was forced to moderate power supplies due to a sudden power cut causing equipment to shut down, sparking a gas leak, Beijing News reported on Monday. A total of 23 people had reportedly come into contact with the gas and all injured people were sent to a local hospital for treatment on Sunday evening.

All affected individuals remain under observation and treatment in the hospital, none are in critical condition, the report said.

The incident follows some areas across the three provinces in Northeast China, including Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning, cutting power after reported electricity shortages caused by a spike in coal prices, the main fuel used for power generation and other reasons. Reports from affected areas state the sudden power cuts are impacting economic activity.
