Passenger split between Beijing’s two airports is 7:3, Daxing up: report

The proportion of passengers between two airports in Beijing now is 7:3, a report released by Beijing Transport Institute showed, revealing transport capacity has shifted as Beijing Daxing International Airport welcomed in its two year operating anniversary in September.  

In terms of flight movements, Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) accounted for about 91.5 percent of Beijing's total movements in 2019. As flights gradually transferred to Daxing airport, the ratio which BCIA now accounts for dropped to 68.7 percent, the report said, according to Beijing Daily on Wednesday. 

Similarly, in terms of passenger traffic, the proportion of inbound and outbound passengers at BCIA has also dropped from 92.4 percent in 2019 to 68.2 percent, while the proportion for Daxing airport has risen to 31.8 percent.

In terms of air routes, in 2020, the top five destination cities for domestic passenger traffic at BCIA were Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou. Among them, the passenger throughput from BCIA to Shanghai Hongqiao was the most high volume route, reaching 1,733,200 passenger trips, according to the report. 

The top five international cities for passenger traffic in BCIA were Seoul, Tokyo, Dubai, Bangkok and Singapore. Among them, the passenger throughput from Seoul to BCIA was the largest, reaching 110,400.

The top five destination cities for domestic passenger traffic at Daxing airport were Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Sanya, Chengdu and Chongqing in 2020, according to the report. 

Among them, the passenger throughput of the Daxing airport to Guangzhou round-trip route was the largest, reaching 916,000. The top five international passenger traffic cities were Kuala Lumpur, London, Bangkok, Fukuoka and Lisbon. Among them, the passenger throughput of Daxing airport to Kuala Lumpur was the largest, reaching 27,000.

Data from Daxing airport showed that it facilitated a total of 38.94 million passengers, with 314,600 flights taking off and landing as of September 22. Cargo throughput was around 215,400 tons.

Currently 26 domestic carriers, including China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Air China, and China United Airlines, operate at Daxing airport. In August, they operated 145 domestic air routes and servicing 135 destinations across the country.

Daxing airport celebrated its second anniversary of operation on September 25 of 2021.
