China's National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) said on Wednesday that it will launch special campaigns to promote intellectual property protection during the upcoming 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.

At a press conference, the CNIPA announced plans to monitor the use of symbols, designs and trademarks for the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games according to Chinese laws. The administration plans to crack down on illegal merchants and e-commerce platforms involved in the production and sale of items that violate intellectual property rights.

The CNIPA has been conducting a rectification campaign targeting the malicious registration of trademarks and intellectual property this year. It has reported four batches of cases totaling 815,000 regarding abnormal intellectual property registrations, and it blocked 93.1 percent of registrations in the first three batches.

The number of inspected malicious trademark registration cases stands at 376,000 so far in 2021, and nearly 200 unlicensed registration agencies have been fined more than 10 million yuan ($1.57 million), said the CNIPA

The CNIPA noted that value for new intellectual property and trademarks in the first 10 months of this year hit 240.77 billion yuan, increasing 50.6 percent year-on-year and exceeding the total in 2020.

China is becoming a major intellectual property exporter. According to data from the CNIPA, China's export and import value for intellectual property in the first three quarters of 2021 reached almost 280 billion yuan, with exports showing a year-on-year increase of 27 percent.

In the 2021 Global Innovation Index, China's ranking jumped to a record high 12th place, leading among middle-income economies.
