The Beijing Institute of Electronic Engineering will form a virtual space collaborative editing platform for combat mission design, based on new virtual environment interaction concepts such as metaverse and virtual twin, in order to provide a technical basis for multi-player collaborative scene editing for military training and other applications, according to a military requirement announcement released by the institution, the Securities Times reported on Wednesday.

According to the announcement, the institution will carry out research on virtual twin and metaverse collaborative modeling and simulation, in order to explore ways to digitally connect equipment to metaverse scenarios.

Alongside the engineering institution, a number of Chinese internet giants have scrambled to join the metaverse, which is widely defined as an alternative digital reality where people work, play and socialize. The country's three online behemoths or "BAT" for Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent have got a head start, including registering related trademarks like “Ali Metaverse.”
