Chinese mainland remained Taiwan Island's largest export destination and source of trade surplus for yet another year in 2021, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said on Wednesday.

Zhu noted that any effort to derail cross-Straits trade is unwise and will not succeed.

The export value of Taiwan Island to Chinese mainland in 2021 hit $188.91 billion, accounting 42.3 percent of Taiwan Island's total export value, data provided by local authorities showed, revealing Taiwan Island's heavy reliance on Chinese mainland market.

"The data proves that Taiwan Island's economy depends on cross-Straits trade with Chinese mainland," said Zhu during a regular press conference in Beijing. She also stated that only by expanding economic cooperation with the Chinese mainland can Taiwan Island's economy continue to grow and benefit local people.

However, the local Taiwan authorities are committed to sabotaging the cross-Straits relationship, backed by supports from some Western governments. "Any attempt to interrupt or impede cross-Straits economic corporation with political purposes is unwise and pointless," said Zhu.
