China will try to stabilize the irrigated farmland at no less than 1.75 billion mu (116.7 million hectare) by 2025, according to an agriculture development outline for the 14th Five Year Plan period (2021-25), which is published by China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on its website on Thursday.

The outline stressed the need to secure over 1.75 billion mu of the farmland, with 800 million mu of rice and wheat planting area by 2025. Aggregate grain output is expected to stabilize at 1.3 trillion jin (650 billion ton) and 1.4 trillion jin, respectively, according to the outline.

The outline also said that China is to expand advanced farming equipment in order to solidify self-sufficiency of major crops, like rice, wheat and soy beans.
