The box office takings for Jurassic World: Dominion in China reached 376 million yuan ($558,400) as of press time, bringing the nation’s daily box office back up to 100 million yuan after 103 days on Friday.

Following the popularity of Jurassic World: Dominion along with more domestic movies targeting the upcoming summer peak season, and 82.59 percent of cinemas across the country resuming operation, the performance of China’s cinema sector is expected to regain momentum.

As of press time, the box office for the summer peak season from June 1 to August 31 had reached 756 million yuan. Analysts noted that China’s box office will gradually recover during the summer if the domestic COVID-19 outbreaks are brought under control and the cinemas nationwide remain in operation.

Data showed that the box office for summers in 2020 and 2021 reached 3.62 billion yuan and 7.38 billion yuan respectively, whereas the box office for the season in 2019 topped 17.78 billion yuan.

The popularity of Jurassic World: Dominion is partly because the series is already well-known, Shi Wenxue, a film critic based in Beijing, told the Global Times on Monday.

As for the upcoming summer season, Shi said that the overall performance may be able to pick up as long as the spread of the virus is effectively contained and more cinemas across the country reopen. Shi said that there are several films have the potential to drive up the box office.

Around 31 movies are scheduled to be shown on the big screen for the upcoming summer, according to Beijing Business Today.

Shi noted that students will be the main audiences for the summer movie season, especially after multiple cities across China lifted the epidemic prevention measures with the summer break approaching.

The box office for the recent Dragon Boat Festival holiday from June 2 to 5 reached 178 million yuan.
