In 1982, China announced the first official list of famous historical and cultural cities. Among the first round of 24 famous cities was Datong, an ancient city in Shanxi Province.

Datong is located at the juncture of the farming civilization of the Central Plains and the nomadic civilization of the north. In 5,000 years of Chinese history, it was chosen as the capital by three nomadic regimes. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was also an important frontier town with mountains and rivers, and home to a large garrison troop.

In 617 AD. Tang Dynasty emperor's Li Yuan and Li Shimin, Li Shimin's son and their allies used aged Fenjiu liquor in the Jin Shrine, which is located at the foot of Xuanweng Mountain in southwest of Jingyang city, to offer sacrifices to heaven and earth. Li Shimin encouraged the soldiers with Fenjiu liquor and an official call to arms.

Located on the way from Chang 'an to Taiyuan, the northern capital, the Fenjiu of Xinghua village was favored by many dignitaries. Since the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, scholars had been coming in an endless stream, leaving many poems for Fenjiu, which made the Xinghua village "The best village of wine and poem."

At that time, solid mixed materials, the distillation method, and the use of yeast and underground crock for ferment were already used to make "Dry Brew", which was the earliest distillation liquor.
