'In Between the Mountains and Rivers' - art exhibition

This new exhibition introduces the ancient cultural and social history of Hangzhou, one of the most culturally rich yet high-tech cities in Zhejiang Province.

The title In Between the Mountains and Rivers refers to the Chinese landscape painting genre known as shanshui (lit: mountain, water). The  Chinese aesthetic ambience of shanshui is often found in poetry and other art forms.

Aimed at taking audiences back to the city of Hangzhou during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), the show displays a total of 311 sets (1,080 individual pieces) of relics covering ancient bronze wares, paintings, gold and silver wares as well as ceramics.

Highlighted relics at the exhibition include a Song Dynasty (960-1279) brick engraved with deer patterns. Another relic, a Song Dynasty porcelain, is also worth seeing as it depicts the outlook of an ancient civil official.

The show is hosted by the Hangzhou Museum, but the diverse range of relics were contributed by other "sister" organizations such as the Luoyang Museum in Luoyang, Henan Province and Jiangsu Province's renowned Suzhou Museum.
