peanuts / 花生 / (huāshēnɡ)

A: Do you know what symbolism is behind the peanuts we all eat all the time?

(nǐ zhīdào wǒmén chánɡchī de  huāshēnɡ yǒu shenme yùyì ma?)

B: I know that peanuts are also called "longevity nuts." They symbolize immortality and never-ending life.

(wǒ zhīdào huāshēnɡ háiyǒu yīɡè mínɡzì jiào "chánɡshēnɡɡuǒ", tāyǒu biǎodá chánɡshēnɡbùlǎo,shēnɡshēnɡ bùxī de yùyì.)

A: Yup. Can I tell you a moving story about peanuts?

(méicuò, wǒ ɡěinǐ jiǎnɡ yīɡè ɡuānyú huāshēnɡ de ɡǎnrén ɡùshì bā?)

B: Tell me all about it. I can't wait to hear some nice stories.

(nǐ shuōshuō kàn.wǒ yǐjīnɡ pòbùjídài xiǎnɡ zhīdào le.)

A: There is an elderly man in Huai'an, Jiangsu Province, who is a peanut farmer. He contracted a severe disease 15 years ago, but was cured by a local doctor. Since then, the farmer has sent the doctor the peanuts that he has grown to show his gratitude.

(yǒu yīwèi zài jiānɡsū huáiān zhǒnɡ huāshēnɡ de lǎonónɡ, shiwuniánqián tā shēnhuàn jíbìnɡ, dàn zuìzhōnɡ bèi běndì de yīwèi yīshēnɡ zhìyù.yīncǐ, zhèwèi lǎorén měinián dōu ɡěi nàwèi yīshēnɡ sònɡ yīxiē zìjǐ zhǒnɡde huāshēnɡ, yǐbiǎo xièyì.)

B: The story makes me think of a proverb, "A drop of water in need shall be returned with a gushing spring."  It is a very classic Chinese saying but people still use it today.

(zhèɡè ɡùshì rànɡwǒ xiǎnɡdào yījù yànyǔ:"dīshuǐ zhīēn dānɡ yǒnɡquán xiānɡbào". zhèshì yījù rénmén rénɡhuì shǐyònɡ de jīnɡdiǎn yànyǔ.)

A: That really is a heart-warming story.
