British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his role in the UK TV series Sherlock, recently found himself in the center of controversy after media reported that his family may be on the hook for paying reparations to Barbados, as the actor's ancestors got rich from slavery on the island.

English media including the Daily Mail and Daily Telegram reported that Barbados was seeking compensation from the descendants of slaveholders.

However, Barbados officials later refuted the rumor saying that although Caribbean countries have asked for compensation from Western governments and companies, the requests were not aimed at individuals or their families.

With this "own goal" incident, news media has clearly opened up the wounds of the past.

Although British colonial rule ended during the 1950s and 1960s, the harm it caused still exists as many issues in Western society are closely tied to this history, which should never be forgotten nor erased.

The sudden online popularity of the rich kids who live in Wanliu Shuyuan, a high-end residential compound in the center of Beijing, reflects the power and influence of the wealthy.

However, flaunting one's wealth should definitely not be the key to becoming an influencer.

Recently, a netizen posted a short video on social media showing off their wealth while tagging the location as Wanliu Shuyuan. The post made it on the trending list on Douyin, where the netizen received millions of likes and gained millions of followers overnight.

What is even more "eye-catching" than this individual's luxurious home, however, are the ghastly and deformed comments in which many people  called the influencer "master" while belittled themselves.

It is understandable that the essence of this kind of comments is the self-mockery culture which is prevailing in the internet ecosystem. But showing off one's wealth should be the least reason that someone gets popular on the social media.

At the same time, every person who lives a good life and works hard deserves respect.
