The base can generate 650 million kilowatt-hours of power annually, with tax revenue of 50 million yuan ($7.7 million). The annual income of fishery breeding amounts to 45 million yuan, and tourism income to 20 million yuan. A total of 640,000 tons of carbon emissions can be avoided every year. Photo: VCG

China will accelerate construction of wind and solar power bases to ramp up renewable energy generation in 2023, as the country is making strides in shifting from coal to renewables to achieve its “dual carbon” goals and help deal with global climate change.

Efforts should be made to ensure that new wind turbines and photovoltaic generators are completed and put into operation on time, and policy and industrial support are strengthened to promote high-quality growth of renewable power, the National Energy Administration said on Monday.

The meeting also stressed the need to further promote the construction of major renewable energy projects, accelerating the pilot projects included in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), and to increase focus on monthly scheduling and monitoring of renewable energy power generation.

According to the meeting, China's new energy development has entered a “new normal”. Newly installed capacity of wind and solar power facilities in China has crossed the threshold of more than 100 million kilowatts annually and its annual power generation has exceeded 1 trillion kWh.

Renewable energy is playing an increasingly prominent role in ensuring the country's energy supply amid the country's pursuit of green development.

China's renewable energy power generation reached 2.7 trillion kWh in 2022, accounting for 31.6 percent of the country's total electricity consumption, an increase of 1.7 percentage points compared with 2021, data from the National Energy Administration showed.

China saw its newly installed capacity of renewable energy reach 152 million kilowatts in 2022, accounting for 76.2 percent of the country's newly installed power generation capacity.
