The virtual recreation of Su Dongpo, or Su Shi, a renowned Song Dynasty (960-1279) literati, appeared on the latest episode of Chinese Poetry Competition, a variety show that introduces ancient Chinese poetry. In the show, the digital Su talked with the hosts and participants in real time, grabbing the attention of audiences and sparking a new wave of discussion concerning virtual avatars.

A result of the deep integration of digital technology and literary creation, virtual avatars are a new digital development trend. These digital avatars should be based on the excellent content of traditional Chinese culture or they will just come across as flat and lack novelty.
