The 19th Western China International Fair (WCIF) closed in Chengdu, Sichuan Province on July 3. It has started a new journey and written a new chapter for the west and the word “new” has become the main theme of this WCIF.

New technology, new mode

During the “Intelligent Manufacturing in the West” matchmaking and negotiation session at the 19th WCIF, exhibitors and purchasers quickly found their favorite partners thanks to the innovative “WCIF Speed Dating” mode created by the Sichuan International Expo Group: procurement needs were displayed on a large screen, while exhibitors and purchasers could instantly obtain all on-site procurement and supply requirements with just one screen for accurate docking.

It is an important purpose of this year’s WCIF to help Sichuan brands “go out” and bring in high-quality projects, so that both supply and demand sides can return with full load. Higher-quality “new” services are reflected in more details of the WCIF.

This year’s WCIF organizing committee launched “butler” services for the first time to enhance the experience of exhibitors, purchasers and visitors. At the WCIF exhibition site, 16 exhibition halls are equipped with exclusive hall managers to provide professional services to exhibitors; multiple volunteer service points are set up to promptly solve problems for exhibitors and purchasers in need.

“New” not only refers to the services but also the themes of high-quality exhibits in the exhibition halls.

“New” themes at exhibition sites: This year’s WCIF focuses on the characteristic and advantageous industries, and strives to serve the construction of a modern industrial system in the western regions; it set up exhibition areas such as regional cooperation development hall, new era western development hall, enterprise development hall, digital economy exhibition, hydrogen energy industry exhibition etc. around key industries such as electronic information, equipment manufacturing, advanced materials, energy and chemical industry, highlighting the display of cutting-edge technologies and latest products.

“New” themes in activities: The WCIF also held nearly 30 events covering equipment manufacturing, artificial intelligence, high-end medical equipment, modern finance and other fields, such as the Chengdu Urban Circle Robot Industry Conference and the Drone World Conference 2023 (Chengdu).

“New technologies are the key to building a modern industrial system.” The purpose of holding these activities is to gather industry leaders to conduct in-depth discussions around the industry frontier and promote technological innovation, according to an official within the secretariat of the organizing committee. Behind the pursuit of a “new” attitude is the determination to promote high-quality economic development.

New opportunities, new spaces

Among the nearly 500 projects signed at this WCIF, most are “green” or “low-carbon.”

“Green” is the biggest natural advantage of western China. “Only 1-2 percent of the land area of the western region is needed to develop renewable energy to support most of the production and supply of future energy consumption in China under the country’s ‘dual carbon’ target.” Zhuo Yujiao, president of Tongwei Group, showed Singapore’s political and business delegation the rich green “family property” of the west through data deduction. Green transformation has also become a “first-class” event for Singapore’s visit to Sichuan to seek cooperation opportunities.

Green energy is the most extensive potential space in western China. Inner Mongolia has played the signboard of “Wind Power Three Gorges,” Gansu claims to “plant the sun” in the desert, and Sichuan says that “among every 100 degrees of hydropower, 28 of them come from Sichuan”... With the more efficient use of natural resources in the west and the greater exploration of the market, Wu Huaxin, chairman of Fujian Eversun Holding Group, is full of confidence: they will not only build a new energy and new materials headquarters base for the central, western regions in Sichuan, but also enter the photovoltaic, lithium battery, hydrogen energy, energy storage and other new energy industries to propel the group’s development. Suyunbek Kasmambetov, State Secretary of Kyrgyzstan, sent invitations to western enterprises, hoping to increase investment and cooperation in the construction of small hydropower in mountainous areas, planning and management of hydropower projects on large rivers, and the development of green energy such as wind energy and solar energy, setting models for international cooperation.

Looking for opportunities in the west, Raul L. Lambino, chairman of the Association for Philippines-China Understanding, arrived in Chengdu one month in advance, and went to Leshan to discuss economic, trade, science and education cooperation, further promoting the establishment of a sister city relationship with Leshan with the platform of the WCIF.

Louder voices, firmer handshakes, and more expectations: Endless possibilities were created in just five days. In the new era of China and the new journey of the west, another spring of cooperation and development has been ushered in.
