The Bohai Oilfield, China's largest offshore crude oil producer, achieved oil and gas output of over 36.8 million tons of oil equivalent (TOE) in 2023, a record high, according to a post from China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC)'s official Wechat account on Sunday.

Crude oil output topped 34 million tons and natural gas production exceeded 3.5 billion cubic meters, according to CNOOC.

In its efforts to increase reserves and output, the Bohai Oilfield has focused on exploring large and medium-sized oil and gas fields.

This includes the discovery of the Bozhong 26-6 oilfield that has reserves of more than 100 million tons.

The Bohai Oilfield has advanced production at several projects, including the Kenli 6-1 oilfield and the Bozhong 19-6 gas field. Crude oil output increased by nearly 2.3 million tons, accounting for approximately 50 percent of total national crude oil incremental production.

Established in 1965, the Bohai Oilfield operates more than 50 oil and gas fields and nearly 200 production facilities. With cumulative oil and gas production of more than 500 million TOE, it is the largest and highest-producing offshore oilfield in China.

In 2023, China made continuous efforts in offshore oil and gas exploration, expanding into deepwater and deep-layer areas.

According to the National Energy Administration, China's oil and gas production exceeded 390 million TOE in 2023, maintaining rapid growth equal to tens of millions of tons for the seventh consecutive year. It has maintained an average annual increase of 11.7 million TOE, reaching a new peak in production growth.

In 2023, domestic crude oil output reached 208 million tons, an increase of more than 3 million tons compared with the previous year and up 19 million tons from 2018, further solidifying the long-term stable production of 200 million tons per year of domestic crude oil.

The substantial increase in marine crude oil output has become a key driver of increased supply, accounting for more than 60 percent of China's increase in oil production for four consecutive years.
