Nvidia has denied reports claiming that the US chipmaker plans to operate in China as a standalone business and plans to spin off its Chinese operations, the company told the Global Times on Tuesday.
"There is no basis whatsoever for any of these claims. It is irresponsible to publish baseless claims and speculation as fact," Nvidia said.
A post on social media platform X by user "Jukanlosreve" claimed, "Rumor: Nvidia is considering establishing a joint venture in China to preserve the CUDA ecosystem and potentially spin off its Chinese operations in the future." The post has been viewed more than 120,000 times as of press time.
The rumor surfaced after the US Commerce Department said on April 15 that it was issuing new export licensing requirements for Nvidia's H20, AMD's MI308 artificial intelligence chips, as well as their equivalents, to China, Reuters reported.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the US government's tightening of chip export controls has already had a significant impact on Nvidia's business, during his visit in Beijing on April 17 and was received by Ren Hongbin, chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.
Huang said that the company will serve the Chinese market unswervingly, and highlight China's strengths in the consumer market, boom industrial ecology and software prowess, according to a report by CCTV News on Thursday.
