When asked to comment on reports that after the China-US high-level economic and trade meeting in Geneva, China will reduce the tariffs on US goods from 125% to 10% within the initial 90 days, while the US will reduce the tariffs on Chinese goods to 30%, including the additional 20% tariffs imposed on China under the pretext of fentanyl, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a press briefing on Wednesday that the economic and trade talks between China and the US in Geneva reached a number of positive consensuses, agreeing to significantly reduce the bilateral tariff levels.
The US has committed to canceling 91% of the tariffs and suspending the implementation of the 24% reciprocal tariffs. Correspondingly, China has also canceled 91% of the countermeasure tariffs and suspended the implementation of the 24% countermeasures tariffs, with both sides retaining 10% tariffs.
As for fentanyl, Lin said that the US, using fentanyl issue as an excuse, unreasonably imposed two rounds of additional tariffs on China. China promptly took countermeasures, including tariff and non-tariff measures, to firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests, and these countermeasures still remain in effect.
