The Chinese Consulate General in Osaka has urged the Japanese side to promptly arrest the suspect and severely punish the perpetrator after a Chinese tourist was slashed by a knife-wielding man in Kyoto on Friday, the Chinese Embassy in Japan said on Saturday.
The assailant, who was unknown to the 37-year-old tourist, remains at large after the attack, which occurred around 8:25 pm in Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward, Kyodo News reported.
The Chinese man, who was visiting Kyoto as part of a group tour, was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening cut running from his right clavicle to his flank according to the Japanese news outlet.
The assailant was described as approximately 1.75 meters tall and wearing glasses and a white T-shirt, according to Japan's NHK.
The assailant and victim reportedly had no prior connection. Japanese police are searching for the attacker on suspicion of attempted murder, NHK reported.
After the incident, the Chinese Consulate General in Osaka immediately contacted and expressed condolences to the injured. The consulate also conveyed concerns to the Japanese police, demanding that the Japanese side promptly arrest the suspect and severely punish the perpetrator, the Chinese Embassy in Japan said.
The embassy reminds Chinese citizens in Japan, especially tourists visiting Japan, to strengthen safety precautions, according to a notice published by the Chinese Embassy in Japan on WeChat on Saturday.
The embassy urged Chinese nationals to closely monitor the local public security situation, inquire about recent occurrences of serious crimes, and avoid going to areas with complex personnel and chaotic public order.
It also asked Chinese nationals to comply with local laws and regulations. In case of targeted discrimination or disputes, they should remain calm, respond properly, avoid verbal or physical conflicts, ensure personal safety, and pay attention to preserving evidence.
In case of an emergency, they should promptly report to the local police, and contact the Chinese embassies and consulates in Japan or other authorities for assistance, said the embassy.
In April, the Chinese Embassy in Japan urged Chinese nationals to strengthen personal safety and hygiene precautions, following Japanese media reports of a rise in violent incidents, including indiscriminate killings since December 2024, as well as multiple mass food safety cases across Japan.
