Operations at Ahmedabad airport temporarily suspended after plane crash on Thursday afternoon, the Press Trust of India reported, citing the airport spokesperson.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to India Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu after the aircraft crashed in India. Modi has asked them to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance is extended to those affected in the wake of the air mishap, ANI reported.
An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, The Times of India reported on Thursday.
The aircraft, bound for London, plunged into the Meghani area of the city, sending up a massive plume of black smoke and triggering an immediate emergency response, said the report.
India Today noted that the flight carried 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Visuals from the area showed thick black smoke in the air as more details about the accident were awaited.
No official information on the exact number of passengers has been released as of press time.
An Air India spokesperson confirmed on X on Thursday that Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in the incident on Thursday.
