Asked to comment on the European Commission (EC)'s decision to restrict Chinese companies from participating in medical equipment tenders worth over 5 million euros — a move it claimed was in response to China's restrictive measures against European firms operating in China, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Friday referred the specific question to competent authorities.
Guo pointed out that China has always adhered to a high level of opening-up to the world, upheld the principles of a market economy and WTO rules, and advocated resolving trade disputes through dialogue and consultation.
The EU has long claimed to be the most open market in the world, but in reality, it is increasingly moving toward protectionism, the spokesperson said, noting that the bloc frequently resorts to unilateral trade measures, using the banner of fair competition to carry out actions that are in fact unfair — a typical example of double standards.
"We hope the EU will follow its commitment to market openness and abide by WTO rules, providing a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies," the spokesperson emphasized. "China will firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its enterprises."
