Following the US announcement of attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran, Israel's military said Iran has fired a fresh wave of missiles toward the country, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces, CNN reported.
"Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat," it said, adding that the public was "instructed to enter a protected space and remain there until further notice." This new wave of missiles is the first Iran has launched since the US announced it had attacked Iran's nuclear facilities, CNN reported.
Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said it launched 40 missiles, including its Khorramshahr-4 missile, during the attack on Israel on Sunday morning, AP News reported.
Iranian state TV showed what appeared to be previous test-firing footage of the Khorramshahr-4 missile, with an on-screen caption saying it was used on Sunday in a barrage on Israel, AP News reported. The Khorramshahr-4 has the heaviest payload of Iran's ballistic missile fleet, which analysts say may be designed to keep the weapon under a 2,000-kilometer range limit imposed by the country's supreme leader, according to the report.
Israel has also launched new airstrikes on western Iran, its first since the US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, according to CNN.
The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that the Israeli Air Force "has begun a series of strikes toward military targets in western Iran."
"Additionally, this morning, the IAF struck missile launchers ready to launch toward Israeli territory, soldiers in the Iranian Armed Forces, and swiftly neutralized the launchers that launched missiles toward Israeli territory a short while ago," the statement said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said previously on Sunday that the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities were "outrageous" and "will have everlasting consequences." He added that, in accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions on legitimate self-defense, Iran reserves all options to protect its sovereignty, interest, and people.
A statement from Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday also "condemns in the strongest possible terms, the US' brutal military aggression against Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities."
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed grave alarm by the use of force by the US against Iran on Saturday. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge - and a direct threat to international peace and security, per UN statement.
Saudi Arabia issued a statement on Sunday expressed "deep concern" with the developments in Iran. The kingdom underscores the need to exert all efforts to exercise restraint, de-escalate, and avoid escalation, the statement said.
"Venezuela Condemns US Military Aggression Against Iran and Demands an Immediate Cessation of Hostilities. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela firmly and categorically condemns the bombing carried out by the United States military, at the request of the State of Israel, against nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan complexes," Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said on Telegram, per Reuters.
Cuban president Miguel Diaz-canel also wrote on X that "We strongly condemn the US bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities, which constitutes a dangerous escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. The aggression seriously violates the UN Charter and international law and plunges humanity into a crisis with irreversible consequences."
