At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, a foreign media reporter asked whether China has begun to strengthen control over two substances that can be used to manufacture fentanyl is in response to a request from the US or in cooperation with the US.
In response, spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the relevant Chinese authorities have already issued an announcement on this matter, which can be referred to. This measure is a self-initiated step taken by the Chinese government to fulfill its obligations as a party to the UN Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, aiming to strictly regulate precursor chemicals. This reflects China's proactive attitude in participating in global drug governance and its sense of responsibility as a major country.
Guo noted that International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking will be observed on June 26. China has the strictest drug control policy in the world and enforces it in the fullest way. There is no fentanyl abuse problem in China. China has also fully promoted and deeply engaged in global cooperation on drug control, carrying out productive anti-drug collaborations with other countries.
"We have repeatedly stated that fentanyl is the US’s problem, not China’s. The responsibility lies squarely with the US itself. Despite China's goodwill, the US has unreasonably imposed tariffs on China under the pretext of the so-called fentanyl issue, which has severely undermined China-US dialogue and cooperation in drug control and significantly harmed China's interests,” Guo noted. If the US is sincere about cooperating with China, it should face the objective facts squarely, correct its wrong practices, and engage in dialogue with China on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit, Guo stressed.
