Iran's foreign minister has condemned the "disrespectful and unacceptable" comments from US President Donald Trump, after the US president claimed to have saved Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei from an "ugly and ignominious death," according to AFP.
"If President Trump is genuine about wanting a deal, he should put aside the disrespectful and unacceptable tone towards Iran's Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, and stop hurting his millions of heartfelt followers," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote in a post on X Saturday.
Araghchi's remarks came after the US president claimed in a social media post that he "saved" Khamenei.
"Why would the so-called 'Supreme Leader', Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of the war torn Country of Iran, say so blatantly and foolishly that he won the War with Israel, when he knows his statement is a lie, it is not so. As a man of great faith, he is not supposed to lie. His Country was decimated, his three evil Nuclear Sites were OBLITERATED, and I knew EXACTLY where he was sheltered, and would not let Israel, or the U.S. Armed Forces, by far the Greatest and Most Powerful in the World, terminate his life. I SAVED HIM FROM A VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Friday.
In his first sortie since the Israel-Iran war ended with a ceasefire earlier this week, Khamenei said Iran "slapped America in the face" by launching missiles at a major US base in Qatar, following US attacks on Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz, according to Al Jazeera.
Trump also said that the US will "absolutely" bomb the country again if it pursues nuclear weapons, Al Jazeera reported.
Araghchi said Iran values its independence and will never allow anyone to decide its destiny. "The Great and Powerful Iranian People, who showed the world that the Israeli regime had NO CHOICE but to RUN to 'Daddy' to avoid being flattened by our Missiles, do not take kindly to Threats and Insults. If Illusions lead to worse mistakes, Iran will not hesitate to unveil its Real Capabilities, which will certainly END any Delusion about the Power of Iran," he wrote in the X post.
Meanwhile, Trump has also said that he would like inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or another respected source to be able to inspect Iran's nuclear sites. But Iran has approved a bill to suspend cooperation with the IAEA. And Araghchi indicated on Friday that Tehran may reject any request by the agency for visits to Iranian nuclear sites, Al Jazeera reported.
