Following US' announcement earlier this week to send more weapons to Ukraine, using European money, the EU's top diplomat Kaja Kallas said the EU welcomed US President Donald Trump's readiness to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, but "would like to see the US to share the burden," at a press briefing after Tuesday's Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, POLITICO.EU reported.
"If we pay for these weapons, it is our support. It is European support. We are doing as much as we can to help Ukraine and therefore the call is that everybody would do the same. If you promise to give the weapons, but say that somebody else is going to pay for it, it is not really given by you, is it?" said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas when asked to clarify her comments on sharing the burden with the US at the press conference, said Kallas, according to a transcript released by the European External Action Service.
On Monday, Trump proposed a plan in which NATO allies would finance the purchase of Patriot missile defense systems and other weapons for Ukraine. Trump said the weapons, worth "billions of dollars," would be built by the US defense industry and paid for by European countries, according to POLITICO.EU.
