Chinese table tennis star Fan Zhendong made his long-anticipated debut in the German table tennis league, Tischtennis-Bundesliga (TTBL), representing Saarbrucken at home against Konigshofen.

In his first singles match, Fan faced Spain’s Roman Ruiz in a tightly contested five-game battle, ultimately falling short 2-3.

Commentating on the match, former Chinese national team player Fang Bo noted that Ruiz’s serves and returns were unconventional and difficult to read. “It was rare to see Fan misjudge serves more than 10 times in a single match,” Fang said.

Ahead of his debut, Fan explained his decision to join Saarbrucken at a press conference: “It’s a very well-known top club. Back in 2016, I played the World Cup, and it left me with unforgettable memories. I'm really looking forward to coming back.”

As to his goals in Germany, Fan stressed the importance of contributing to the team. “I’m very happy to start this journey. I hope to help the club achieve good results. Everyone here has high expectations of me. For now, I just want to stay focused on my matches and deliver strong performances. I also believe my teammates will support me in reaching my best form,” he said.

According to the match schedule, if the tie extends to a fourth singles rubber, Fan is set to return to the table against German international Benedikt Duda.
