For Hong Kong compatriots, the military parade staged in Tian'anmen Square strengthens national pride and identity, raises awareness of national security, and reinforces confidence in Hong Kong's prosperity and stability under "One Country, Two Systems," said a delegate from the Hong Kong delegation attending the commemorative activities of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
"It is a great honor to witness the parade in person. The event not only showcases the achievements of national defense, but also reflects the cohesion and confidence of the Chinese nation. I experienced the sense of security and mission that comes from our country's growing strength," Prof. Lu Haitian, chairman of Hong Kong Quality and Talent Migrants Association, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
A delegation comprising about 360 members from various sectors of the community from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), led by HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee, attended the commemorative activities held in Beijing on Wednesday.
Hong Kong suffered from the ravages of Japanese occupation during WWII, and many compatriots sacrificed their lives. This parade is both a remembrance of history and a reminder to cherish today's peace and prosperity, said Lu.
"As an educator in Hong Kong and chairman of the Hong Kong Quality and Talent Migrants Association, I see the need for young people to deepen their understanding of Chinese history, culture, and national development," the professor said.
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, passed the Patriotic Education Law in 2023, and the Hong Kong SAR government has also advanced related initiatives. Lu said, "the parade inspires me to take concrete actions to help more young people in Hong Kong appreciate the country's progress, and to strengthen their sense of mission and responsibility."
