In response to a question on how China, as a developing country that has eradicated absolute poverty and achieved the poverty reduction goals, leverages poverty reduction cooperation to promote shared development in the Global South, given that Friday is the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, said on Friday that China is dedicated to advancing South-South Cooperation, focusing on development to help Global South countries overcome poverty challenges.
"Having lifted 800 million people out of poverty, China met the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda's poverty reduction target ahead of schedule, inspiring confidence among the Global South countries. No one should be left behind in poverty eradication. We will continue to support global poverty reduction through concrete actions, fostering shared prosperity with Global South countries and nurturing hope on every land," said Lin at a regular press conference.
Lin noted that tailored, demand-driven, precise, and dynamic poverty alleviation strategies provide actionable models, while technical assistance, financial support, capacity building, and platform creation offer systemic support for global poverty reduction.
Since the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was launched, it has helped more than 40 million people overcome poverty. The Global Development Initiative (GDI) has rallied consensus, mobilized funds, and advanced international cooperation, aligning with the Global South priorities and effectively supporting poverty reduction and development, Lin said.
Lin highlighted that from irrigation wells to roads and bridges, from juncao cultivation to hybrid rice, and from landmark projects to small-scale livelihood initiatives, China's efforts have improved lives across the Global South, giving people hope.
"No one should be left behind in poverty eradication," he said. "We will continue to support global poverty reduction through concrete actions, fostering shared prosperity with the Global South nations and nurturing hope on every land."
