The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, the world's tallest bridge, will officially open to traffic on September 28, the Guizhou Provincial Government announced at a recent press conference held on Wednesday, the state broadcaster CCTV News reported.
Since construction began in early 2022, the project team has overcome the natural challenges posed by the Huajiang Grand Canyon.
The construction team used the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System for construction assistance, while also making use of drone technology, BIM modeling, intelligent monitoring, ultra-high-strength materials, and innovative construction techniques, the team achieved millimeter-level precision in building at heights of 600 meters—truly turning a perilous chasm into a thoroughfare, the report said.
The bridge is 2,890 meters long with a main span of 1,420 meters. Rising 625 meters above the river, it will set the record for both the tallest bridge in the world and the world's largest span bridge built in a mountainous area, upon completion.
The Xinhua News Agency reported that the bridge had completed a key load test as of August 25.
The load test, considered the final step before the bridge welcomes traffic -- included both static and dynamic tests. The testing team drove 96 trucks, weighing about 3,300 tons in total, onto designated points of the deck in batches to measure displacement and stress in the main span, towers, cables and suspenders, Xinhua said.
