At the regular press conference of Foreign Ministry on September 29, a reporter asked the spokesperson to confirm whether China has asked the US to oppose “Taiwan independence” and provide more details on the negotiations as the Wall Street Journal reported that Chinese negotiation representatives asked the US to officially declare to oppose “Taiwan independence” while Washington’s previous statement has been not supporting “Taiwan independence.”
In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the Taiwan question is the core of China’s core interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations. Guo stressed that the one-China principle is a fundamental norm in international relations and a universal consensus of the international community, as well as the political foundation of China-US relations. To uphold the one-China principle means firmly opposing “Taiwan independence” separatist activities, he said.
