Chinese steelmaker Baogang United Steel has independently developed a rare-earth, high-strength, high-toughness oil casing, which was used for the first time in an 8,000-meter-deep well in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Global Times learned from the company on Tuesday.

Deep well exploration and development demand stringent steel pipe performance, requiring high resistance to extrusion, tension, and torsion simultaneously. Facing these technical challenges, Baogang United Steel leveraged its unique rare-earth steel product advantage to successfully develop oil casing suitable for ultra-deep wells (6,000-9,000 meters), the company said in a press release.

Compared with conventional casings, the new product significantly enhances compressive and deformation resistance, making it suitable for operations in complex subterranean environments, according to the firm.

This breakthrough not only accumulates valuable experience for overcoming technical barriers in ultra-deep well operations but also supports the development of super-deep wells, contributing to national energy security.
