The UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a draft resolution on Wednesday urging the US to end its economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba.
The draft resolution was passed by a vote of 165 in favor, seven against and 12 abstentions. Argentina, Hungary, Israel, North Macedonia, Paraguay, Ukraine and the US voted against it.
China is among those voted in favor.
The draft reiterated the UNGA's call upon all UN states to refrain from promulgating and applying laws and measures of the kind referred to in the preamble to the text, in conformity with their obligations under the UN Charter and international law, which, inter alia, reaffirm the freedom of trade and navigation.
It also urged member states "that have and continue to apply such laws and measures to take the necessary steps to repeal or invalidate them as soon as possible in accordance with their legal regime."
Since 1992, the UNGA has adopted by an overwhelming majority the non-binding annual resolution, urging the US to end its embargo against Cuba imposed since 1962.
On October 28 local time, during a United Nations General Assembly meeting to discuss the resolution to end the blockade against Cuba, Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations said that China firmly upholds multilateralism and the international system with the United Nations at its core, and resolutely opposes hegemonism. The Chinese side highly appreciates Cuba's contribution to safeguarding international fairness and justice and promoting global cooperation, and stands ready to further deepen cooperation in various fields.
China once again strongly urges the US to immediately and fully lift its economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba, remove Cuba from the so-called "State Sponsors of Terrorism" list, and stop going against the international community and the conscience of humanity, said Fu.
