Russia held a ceremony to unveil its new nuclear submarine, the 'Khabarovsk' on Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry has announced. The ceremony took place in Severodvinsk, and was attended by Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and other top brass, according to RT News.
The vessel is designed to carry the massive torpedo-shaped nuclear-powered Poseidon drone.
"Carrying underwater weapons and robotic systems, it will enable us to successfully accomplish missions related to ensuring the security of Russia's maritime borders and protecting its national interests in various parts of the world's oceans," Belousov said, per RT.
The minister added that the submarine still has to complete a series of sea tests, and wished its crew and builders further success.
Earlier on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that nuclear-propelled Poseidon drones had been successfully tested, according to Anadolu News Agency.
Speaking at a meeting with wounded soldiers in Moscow's Mandryka Hospital, Putin said that "for the first time, it was possible to launch a nuclear power engine" for the underwater torpedo drone system, the report said.
Putin added that the device is impossible to intercept and that "in terms of speed and depth, it has no analogues in the world."
