By Brasil 247 - Brazil's Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, announced on November 7, during the COP30, that the ordinance opening a public consultation for the country's first large-scale battery auction will be published on November 10. The information was reported by Agência iNFRA. According to Silveira, the auction is scheduled for 2026 and marks a strategic step in diversifying Brazil's energy matrix.

"The country has already advanced significantly in wind and solar power. And on Monday, the public consultation for the battery auction — the first in our history — will be released, precisely because wind and solar are intermittent and not storable. So, we need batteries," Silveira told GloboNews.

The initiative aims to encourage energy storage, one of the main challenges for renewable sources. As Brazil's wind and solar generation continues to grow, large-scale battery systems are becoming essential to ensure stability and reliability across the national power grid.

A milestone for Brazil's energy sector

The upcoming battery auction — a first for the country — is expected to define a new regulatory framework for integrating energy storage solutions into Brazil's grid. The Ministry of Mines and Energy anticipates that the project will attract substantial investments, particularly from Chinese companies that lead the global battery industry.

These companies have been at the forefront of developing advanced lithium-ion and lithium-iron-phosphate technologies for both electric vehicles and large-scale storage systems. Their participation could bring cutting-edge technology, competitive pricing, and new partnerships to Brazil's renewable energy transition.

Strengthening Brazil's clean energy transition

The measure also reinforces President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's commitment to a sustainable and low-carbon future. By expanding renewable generation and introducing large-scale storage, Brazil aims to enhance energy security while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The consultation process will open the door for contributions from companies, industry associations, and experts, helping define the structure of the 2026 auction — including project size, location, technology type, and investment conditions. The move positions Brazil as a regional pioneer in energy storage and deepens its collaboration with global clean-tech leaders, especially China.
