At a regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, a Global Times reporter asked: According to reports, the Japanese government held its autumn conferment of decorations on Tuesday and presented decoration of Order of the Rising Sun to Hsieh Chang-ting, former head of "Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan," who claimed on social media on the same day that he would continue making effort for “Japan-Taiwan friendship.” What is China’s comment on this?
In response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated on Wednesday that China has previously stated its position on the issue. “The Japanese government insisted on proposing and presenting decoration to an individual who advocates for the "Taiwan independence" rhetoric, which is another mistaken move by Japan on the Taiwan question, and China firmly opposes this,” Guo added.
The Taiwan question is at the core of China’s core interests and bears on the political foundation of China-Japan ties and basic credibility of Japan, and is a red line that must not be crossed, the spokesperson stressed.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. It is also the 80th anniversary of the restoration of Taiwan. China urges Japan to take a hard look at its responsibility for the war crimes, abide by the relevant principles and spirit of the four political documents between the two countries, uphold its commitment on the one-China principle with practical actions, be prudent on the Taiwan question, and stop sending any wrong signals to separatist forces for “Taiwan independence,” the spokesperson stressed.
