By Brasil 247 - The Brazilian government welcomed on Thursday the decision by the US to revoke the additional 40% tariff applied to a wide range of agricultural products imported from Brazil. The information was first reported by Agência Gov, which detailed the executive order issued by the White House and the reactions in Brasília.

In a message posted on social media, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said the tariff withdrawal was "a victory of dialogue, diplomacy and common sense." Lula emphasized that the progress resulted from his direct conversations with the US President and from the work of Brazil's negotiation team, led by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and the ministers Fernando Haddad and Mauro Vieira.

The US decision removes the 40% surcharge on products such as coffee, tea, tropical fruits, fruit juices, cocoa, spices, bananas, oranges, tomatoes and beef. The annex published by the White House also lists processed foods, beverages, fertilizers, minerals, fossil fuels, oil and derivatives. The measure is retroactive to November 13, expanding its immediate economic impact on Brazilian exports.

According to the executive order, the US President acted after a phone call with Lula on October 6, during which both leaders agreed to start negotiations to address issues linked to Executive Order 14.323, which had imposed the additional tariff. The US administration cited "initial progress in negotiations" with Brazil as one of the reasons for the reversal.

Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it received the US decision "with satisfaction," noting that it reflects the long-standing 201-year tradition of positive diplomatic relations between the two countries. The statement added that the government remains committed to continuing negotiations to remove remaining tariff barriers affecting Brazilian exports.

Vice President Geraldo Alckmin said the government's strategy of prioritizing dialogue opened "an avenue of understanding" that can protect jobs in Brazil and widen opportunities in foreign trade.

The decision follows recent talks in Washington between Brazil and the US, where both sides discussed ways to accelerate progress in tariff reduction and strengthen the bilateral agenda.

The Brazilian government stated it will keep working with the US to eliminate all remaining additional tariffs on Brazilian goods.
