Chinese Consulate-General in Sydney issued a safety alert for Chinese nationals in its consular district on Sunday after a shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach left at least 12 people killed and multiple injured.

According to a statement released by the consulate-general, a shooting occurred at Bondi Beach in Sydney’s east on Sunday, resulting in multiple casualties. The local police have urged the public to avoid the area where the incident took place.

The Chinese Consulate-General in Sydney reminded Chinese nationals in New South Wales, including staff of Chinese-funded enterprises and institutions, Chinese expatriates, Chinese overseas students, and tourists, to pay close attention to the local security situation, raise personal safety awareness, take appropriate safety precautions, keep mobile phones accessible, and promptly call local police and emergency hotlines in case of danger.

Police say at least 12 people have been killed in a shooting near a Jewish gathering at Bondi Beach. One shooter was killed, while another is in custody, Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

Authorities say there is no longer an active threat but have urged people to avoid the area.

Police earlier said they are working to disarm what they’ve described as an IED, or improvised explosive device, according to newswire.lk.

Many members of the Jewish community had assembled at the beach to celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday of Lights, earlier in the evening, Xinhua reported.
At least 16 people had been taken to the hospital, and more were being treated at the scene, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the scenes at Bondi were "shocking and distressing," according to AFP. "My thoughts are with every person affected," he said in a statement.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned Sunday’s shooting in Sydney as a “cruel attack on Jews” and urged Australia to step up the fight against antisemitism, AFP reported.
