By Brasil 247 - Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Saturday condemned a US military offensive against Venezuela, describing it as a serious violation of international law and a direct threat to global stability, while calling for a vigorous response from the United Nations.
Lula delivered the message in a public post presenting Brazil's official position on the episode. He said the bombardments on Venezuelan territory and the capture of the country's president represent an unacceptable escalation that undermines the principles governing relations among sovereign states. "The bombardments on Venezuelan territory and the capture of its president cross an unacceptable line. These acts represent a grave affront to Venezuela's sovereignty and yet another extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community," Lula said. He warned that such actions could open the way to widespread instability. "Attacking countries, in blatant violation of international law, is the first step toward a world of violence, chaos and instability, where the law of the strongest prevails over multilateralism," he added.
Lula emphasized that Brazil's condemnation of the use of force is consistent with the country's long-standing foreign policy approach. "Condemning the use of force is consistent with the position Brazil has always adopted in recent situations in other countries and regions," he said, underscoring Brazil's commitment to peaceful and diplomatic solutions.
The Brazilian president also drew attention to the region's history of external interventions, warning that the episode echoes the darkest moments of interference in Latin America and the Caribbean and threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace. "The action recalls the worst moments of interference in the politics of Latin America and the Caribbean and threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace," Lula said.
He concluded by urging a strong reaction from the international community through the UN. "The international community, through the United Nations, needs to respond vigorously to this episode," Lula said, reiterating Brazil's stance: "Brazil condemns these actions and remains available to promote the path of dialogue and cooperation."
