Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory announced on Thursday that it has rolled out its 5 millionth electric drive system, the Global Times was confirmed on Thursday.

Tesla's self-developed three-in-one integrated electric drive system comprises a motor, gearbox and inverter and features higher energy conversion efficiency, a more compact structure and lighter weight, according to the plant's official Sina Weibo account.

On December 30, the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory rolled off its 9 millionth vehicle - a white Model Y, a model that Tesla said continues to lead sales in key global markets, the company told the Global Times. It described the development as a new example of "Tesla speed" in China.

Tesla announced on December 8 that its Shanghai Gigafactory has reached a new milestone with the rollout of its 4 millionth vehicle, a landmark achievement for the company's largest production hub in Shanghai. The plant now contributes nearly half of Tesla's worldwide electric vehicle deliveries.

The Shanghai plant, Tesla's first Gigafactory outside the US, began construction in January 2019 and produced its first vehicle in December of that year, Xinhua reported.

Beyond passenger cars, Tesla's presence in Shanghai has extended into energy storage. In February 2025 Tesla's Megapack energy storage plant in Shanghai's Lingang New Area began operations —the first of its kind built by Tesla outside the US.
