The Chinese app “Sileme,” which literally translates as “are you dead,” announced on its official Weibo account on Wednesday that it is inviting the public to propose a new Chinese name.
“Names are the soul of a product and a bond that connects us with our users. Our previous renaming attempts fell short of expectations, so we have decided to return the naming right to those who understand the app best,” the operator said, calling on the public to submit suggestions for a new name.
The operator said it will select the best suggestion and award a 666-yuan cash red packet to the first user who proposes the chosen name, with submissions open until January 18.
The app just announced on its official Weibo account on Tuesday that after careful internal deliberation, it will officially adopt the global brand name Demumu in its upcoming new version, following a wave of public attention and online debate triggered by the app.
Previously, the app sparked widespread discussion on Chinese social media due to the quirky nature of its Chinese name. Many users on lifestyle platform Xiaohongshu said they paid to download the app largely because they were drawn by the name.
Others, however, commented on Weibo that the name “Sileme” was somewhat inappropriate, arguing that its wording carried unhealthy or negative connotations.
