Some senior Russian officials responded on Monday as US President Donald Trump suggested that the Arctic island could be purchased and taken over by the US, with Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters that Trump will undoubtedly go down in world history if he resolves the issue of annexing Greenland, TASS News Agency reported Monday.
"Perhaps here we can detach ourselves from the question of whether this is good or bad or whether it complies with international law or not. But there are international experts who believe that by resolving the issue of Greenland's accession, Trump will go down in history. Not only in US history, but in world history as well. And, I repeat, without discussing whether this is good or bad, it is difficult to disagree with these experts," said the spokesman, according to the TASS.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev hailed the "collapse of the transatlantic union." Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev joked about Europe getting poorer, Reuters reported on Monday.
On his X account, Medvedev mockingly used an "equation" to suggest that Make America Great Again (MAGA) equals Make Denmark Small Again (MDSA), which equals Make Europe Poor Again (MEPA).
Greenland, the world's largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over defense and foreign policy. The US maintains a military base on the island. Since returning to office in 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to "obtain" Greenland, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Trump has accelerated his push to acquire the island. On Saturday, Trump announced that the US would impose a 10 percent tariff from February 1 on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Finland, and raise the levy to 25 percent from the beginning of June unless a deal is reached for the US to purchase the territory, according to the Xinhua.
