Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday expressed strong support for Greenland and Denmark and opposition to tariffs proposed by the United States.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Carney said, "We stand firmly with Greenland and Denmark and fully support their unique right to determine Greenland's future."
Carney said Canada strongly opposes tariffs over Greenland and calls for "focused talks to achieve our shared objectives of security and prosperity in the Arctic."
Referring to the U.S. move as weaponizing economic integration, he said that multilateral institutions, including the United Nations and the Conference of the Parties (COP), which aim to solve collective problems, "are under threat."
Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on eight European countries in an effort to advance his ambition to "take over" Greenland, which has triggered pushback from European countries.
