China always opposes unilateral and protectionist measures in all forms, and opposes politicizing, weaponizing, or instrumentalizing economic and trade issues, a Chinese Commerce Ministry (MOFCOM) spokesperson said on Friday, stressing that the Chinese side has repeatedly urged the Mexican side to correct its erroneous practice of unilaterally imposing additional tariffs, and expressed serious concern over the possible so-called "economic security review" of Chinese investments by the Mexican side.
The spokesperson's remarks came in response to a reporter's question that a senior Mexican official said in an interview that the US side once accused Mexico of being used as a "gateway" for Asian goods exported to the US, and welcomed Mexico's imposition of additional tariffs on products such as cars and steel imported from non-free trade partners, and thus the Mexican side is mulling conducting "economic security review" of Chinese investment.
On September 25, 2025, the MOFCOM launched a trade and investment barrier investigation into the relevant restrictive measures against China by Mexico. The ministry will soon announce the final conclusions of the investigation and take corresponding measures in due course to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of China, the spokesperson said.
Mutual respect and win-win cooperation represent the valuable experience in the development of China-Mexico economic and trade relations. The sound and steady growth of bilateral economic and trade ties requires both sides to move toward each other. China stands ready to work with Mexico to strengthen communication and exchanges, properly manage differences, and jointly safeguard the overall interests of our bilateral economic and trade relationship, the spokesperson said.
"We hope Mexico will view economic and trade cooperation with China in a rational, objective, and comprehensive manner, respect market rules and the principles of fair competition, and provide an open, fair, and predictable environment for enterprises from all countries, including from China," the spokesperson noted.
