A man and a woman have been confirmed dead following a stabbing incident at a commercial complex in Tokyo's bustling Ikebukuro district Thursday evening, local media reported.

According to public broadcaster NHK, at around 7:20 p.m. local time, emergency services received a call reporting that a man armed with a knife was causing a disturbance at a shop selling gaming merchandise inside the complex.

A woman, believed to be a store employee in her 20s, was stabbed by the man. The man, thought to be in his 20s to 30s, stabbed himself in the neck after attacking the woman. Both fell unconscious and were transported to the hospital, but later died of their injuries, the report said.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the details of the incident.
