Former vice chairman of China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) Wang Jianjun is prosecuted on charges of bribery, domestic media outlets, including Xinhua News Agency and CCTV News, reported on Tuesday.
After an initial investigation, Wang was found to have abused his authority to seek personal benefits, according to news reports, citing the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP).
Wang was suspected of taking massive bribes and has been handed to the procuratorial authorities for review and prosecution after China's top anti-graft watchdog, the National Supervisory Commission, concluded its investigation, said the SPP.
The SPP, in accordance with law, decided to arrest Wang on suspicion of accepting bribes and designated the Weifang People's Procuratorate in East China's Shandong Province to examine the case and file charges. Recently, the Weifang People's Procuratorate has filed public charges with the Weifang Intermediate People's Court.
According to media reports, during the review and prosecution stage, the procuratorial authorities informed the defendant of his litigation rights, interrogated the defendant, and heard the defense counsel's opinions.
The procuratorate's indictment read that the defendant, by taking advantage of positions he held — including deputy director of the CSRC's Yunnan Bureau, deputy director of the General Office of the CSRC, and director of the Department of Market Regulation, sought personal benefits for relevant organizations and individuals and illegally accepted property from others. The amount involved is massive, and Wang should be held criminally responsible for his crime of accepting bribes in accordance with Chinese law, said the SPP.
Public information shows that Wang, 57, a native of Sichuan Province, began his career in July 1991 and joined the Communist Party of China in October 1994. He had worked in the country's securities regulatory system for over 20 years, and became vice chairman of CSRC in 2021.
In April 2025, Wang was put under investigation for suspected severe violations of the Party disciplines and the law. He was removed from his post as vice chairman of the CSRC, Xinhua reported on May 21, 2025.
