The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture has risen to three, with five people in cardiac arrest and at least seven others missing, public broadcaster NHK reported Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Kyodo News said that dozens of people may have died in the 7.1-magnitude tremor, citing a government official.
